The temple was constructed in 1143-1173 AD by king Raja Raja Chola II, grandson of king Raja Raja I The monument is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. Efforts are on to declare this temple as a World Heritage Monument as an addition to Lord Brahadeeshwarar Temple, Thanjavur. The Temple is located at a distance 5 km from Kumbakonam in Kumbakonam - Thanjavur bus route. The Temple is repository of art and architecture. It is famous for its intricate carvings.
